Description

Performs daily health assessment, diagnostic evaluations, and cli! nical treatment of laboratory animals. Assists with clinical assessment data collection and evaluation. Principal Responsibilities:

  • Accurately follow detailed standard operating procedures in a highly regulated environment meeting internal BMS guidelines and standards as well as external guidelines and regulations related to animal care and use (Food and Drug Administration Good Laboratory Practice and United States Department of Agriculture Animal Welfare regulations).
  • Provides the daily clinical veterinary care (basic medical treatments, diagnostic and technical laboratory procedures) for stock and research animals and maintains appropriate documentation.
  • Provides surgical and dental prophylaxis assistance including administration of general anesthesia, teeth cleaning, surgical preparation, and peri-operative care.
  • Operates and maintains medical or laboratory equipment (e.g., anesthesia machines, pulse oximeter, EKG, thermometer, mi! croscopes, and centrifuges) in area of responsibility.
  • Provides support on technical procedures for investigative staff as required.
  • Works collaboratively with veterinary staff and investigative staff to achieve desired outcomes and to review reports and results.
  • Maintains awareness of active research projects and clinical cases in their area of responsibility.
  • Authors or reviews department standard operating procedures and makes recommendations for revisions as needed.
  • Participates in a rotating on call schedule for weekend, holiday, and emergency coverage.
  • Occasionally required travel for training or other business needs where consecutive nights away from home could be required.
  • This position will require the employee to work with chemical, radiological, or biological agents. Employees will be required to follow all safety procedures and use personal protective clothing/equipment where specified.
Qualifications

Bachelor’s Degree preferably in one of! the life sciences is required.
  • Good oral and written communication skills.
  • Knowledge of the biology and proper handling of laboratory animal species normally attained with a bachelor’s degree in Veterinary Technology or a bachelor’s degree in one of the life sciences and/or relevant experience in a laboratory animal facility.
  • AALAS certification of ALAT or higher is preferred. Individuals who possess appropriate experience and who do not have AALAS certification at the ALAT level must obtain this certification within 12 months of assignment to this position.
  • The individual should have familiarity with veterinary procedures and experience with oral, subcutaneous, intramuscular, intravenous, and intraperitoneal treatments in animals and with using injectable anesthetics, and general anesthesia / peri-operative care for routine procedures.
  • The individual should be familiar with the use of standard equipment within an animal! facility or veterinary clinic (e.g., anesthesia, radiology, surgery, c! omputer, etc.).
  • The individual should be experienced in the acquisition and analyses of laboratory data gathered from the equipment they operate or clinical cases they oversee, and assuring appropriate response to abnormal results.
  • The individual must have proficiency in handling animals including species that are difficult to deal with.
  • They must have understanding of the requirements and proper use of personal protective equipment for entry into areas where potentially hazardous agents are being used and where exposure to zoonotic diseases is possible.
