DUTIES:
DUTIES:
This position is located within t! he Pathology & Laboratory Medicine Service at the Veterans Affairs Medical Center in East Orange, New Jersey. Duties include but are not limited to the following:

Cleans, maintains, troubleshoots and safely utilizes all

histopathology and cytopathology laboratory

equipment;

Processes tissues either manually or mechanically through fixation, dehydration and infiltration;

Decides on special processing schedules for unusual specimens (i.e. dense bone, lipid, and blood);

Embeds tissues, cuts thin sections and does routine staining;

Performs special stains when necessary for diagnostic clarification;

Performs preparation of frozen sections for rapid interpretation/diagnosis of tissue during surgery

Performs complex Immunohistochemical staining and other specialized stain procedures including fungus, amyloid and PAS staining;

Alters and standardizes the pH of solutions used in these staining! methods to achieve the precise staining results;

Prepares fro! zen section and MOH's tissue sections for pathologist examination;

Prepares samples for molecular testing;

Maintaining and running controls with special procedures to check any discrepancies that could cause false results;

Takes necessary action to correct false positive results;

Prepares and stains all submitted cytology specimens, utilizing smear prep, cell block and FNA technology;

Performs gross examination of small routine biopsies for pathologist examination;

Assists radiologist in all FNA biopsies;

Documents all quality assurance and quality control for all GYN specimens;

Logs all surgical pathology and cytology material accurately into computer for record keeping and physician information;

Researches and develops new procedures for improving methodology;

Familiarizes pathology staff and residents with techniques and equipment;

Fills in for the Autopsy Assistant when ne! cessary;

Keeps a daily workload log.

Work Schedule: Monday thru Friday, hours are varied.

DESIGNATED DRUG-TESTING POSITION:
Applicants tentatively selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment. Applicants who refuse to be tested will be denied employment with VA. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test result is received.

QUALIFICATIONS REQUIRED:
BASIC EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT:
A bachelor's degree or four (4) years of college education leading to a bachelorÂ's degree from an accredited institution with a major field of study in the health sciences or allied sciences that is appropriate to the work of this position.

IN ADDITION TO THE BASIC EDUCATIONAL REQUIREMENT, THIS POSI! TION REQUIRES:

One (1) year of specialized experience that equipped you with the particular knowledge, skills and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position, and that is typically in or related to the work of the position to be filled? To be creditable, specialized experience must have been equivalent to at least the GS-7 grade level of Federal service.

Examples of specialized experience include:
preparing human tissue specimens; working knowledge of applicable tools, systems and techniques used to process tissue samples; carrying out various diagnostic tests on tissue samples; performing complex analyses on tissue specimens and evaluating abnormal results; documenting results and reporting findings; and maintaining histopathology and cytopathology laboratory equipment.

SUBSTITUTION OF EDUCATION:
A masterÂ's degre! e or two (2) full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree from an accredited institution in a directly related field of study that demonstrates your ability to perform the duties of this position may be substituted for the experience required at the GS-9 grade level. One year of full-time graduate education is considered to be the number of credit hours that the school attended has determined to represent 1 year of full-time study. If that number cannot be obtained from the school, 18 semester hours should be considered an academic year of graduate study.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT:
The work requires regular and recurring physical exertion such as standing for long periods of time, bending over microscopes, etc. The work involves regular and recurring risks or discomforts associated with working in a clinical and anatomic laboratory, i.e. working with infectious tissue samples, hazardous chemicals and fumes, such as alcohol, xylene, formalin and acids. The Technologist utilizes a fume hood when using these substances. ! The Technologist wears protective clothing such as coats, masks, goggle! s, or gloves and takes extreme safety precautions in handling fresh and fixed specimens, and in using scalpel.
