The Veterinary Technician (VT), under minimal supervision, is responsible for monitoring the health status of all animals within the animal facility, administerin! g routine treatments and medications to sick, injured or surgically modified animals, performing minor diagnostic tests, assisting the veterinarians with physical exams and surgical procedures. This position requires in-depth knowledge of current veterinary nursing care, husbandry techniques and animal behavior and a genuine concern for the well-being of animals. Employees at this level are expected to have a working knowledge of all departments SOP’s federal, state, and local regulations.

Job Description:

  • Perform daily observations and health checks on animals throughout the facility including acute and chronic animal models, i.e., drug metabolism, holding, training, colony and toxicology animals with supervision.
  • Assists the veterinarian in clinical care and treatment of all animals on Animal Health Check Request (AHCR) and/or emergency cases and assures that the appropriate documentation flow of veterinary care and treatments is fo! llowed.
  • Perform standard laboratory diagnostic proced! ures. Examples include: microbiology, blood analyses and evaluations, fecal evaluation, minor aseptic procedures, radiology, and electrocardiography.
  • Provide technical assistance and expertise to all associates in relation to their animal needs. Examples include: venous and arterial catheter placement, urinary catheter placement, phlebotomy, anesthesia/sedation, and wound management. Etc.
  • Maintain the health records on large animals, clinical case records on all species, and deceased/necropsy records on all species for appropriate internal audits.
  • Maintain veterinary areas and supplies within the animal facilities including inventory of drug and medication supplies, maintenance of controlled substance log, the purchasing of veterinary supplies and equipment, as well as purchasing of specialty items for other groups, which require interaction with Purchasing, Receiving, Accounts Payable and other departments as necessary.
  • Responsible for d! ay-to-day operation of the surgical facilities (sterilization of surgery packs, maintenance of equipment, rotation and purchasing of surgical supplies) and assistance in surgical cases (pre-anesthesia, prep, monitoring of anesthesia, post-operative care).
  • Carry out the day-to-day operation of the sentinel program including ordering, identifying, collection and submitting appropriate animals and/or samples for health profiles and maintaining records and lab work on the sentinel animals.
  • Assist in the program of psychological enrichment and well-being of all species, especially non-human primates.
  • Act as the responsible technician on specialty studies in support of Scientist.
  • Maintain inventory of animals that are maintained on Animal Holding protocols for training purposes.
  • Assist in the administration of the RAPP program of LAS in conjunction with the Office of Animal Welfare Compliance. Minimum requirements  Working knowledge! of federal, state, local (Animal welfare) regulations, Departmental SO! P’s and regulations pertaining to Good Laboratory Practices.
 Required skills are typically attained through a B.S. degree in laboratory animal science, veterinary technology, or bioscience and/or five to seven or more years of relevant experience.
 AALAS Certification at the Laboratory Animal Technologist Level (LATg) and/or certification as a Veterinary Technician.
 Must be thoroughly familiar with various laboratory animal species, to include basic anatomy, physiology, behavior, diseases and animal models. Thorough knowledge of veterinary nursing care.

Preferred:
Veterinary Technician License in some state and AALAS Certification at the Laboratory Animal Technologist Level (LATg).
