Position Summary:

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Manager-Research Laboratory Operations.

The Manager of Research Laboratory Operations reports directly to the Institute Director and works closely with the Executive Director to oversee the use and maintenance of research space and shared equipment, including ISGs sophisticated Genome Foundry and the new automation suite to be built at ISGs satellite location at InnoLabs.
Works with lab managers or designees to ensure research compliance and the resiliency of ISGs research operations, and oversees communications related to research lab operations.
Responsible for the innovation, development and optimization of new experimental techniques involving the use of cutting-edge technologies/equipment in the institute. This requires designing and creating customized equipment to support novel experimental systems, and partnering with ISG faculty, trainees and staff on the appropriate use of such equipment and related techniques.
Keeping up to date with technical literature is an essential component of this role.
Projects involving significant contributions are expected to result in co-authorship of publications.

Job Responsibilities:

    • Work as part of a team with investigators to develop and implement automated DNA synthesis, PCR and DNA assembly methods. Implement workflows for the automation suite that any lab member can utilize. Continue to evolve workflows to increase efficiencies in regards to time and resources.
    • Supervise work and train GenomeFoundry@ISG technicians and delegate responsibilities for regularly performed experiments.
    • Curate and Maintain ISG collection of yeast and bacterial strains in automated biobank storage system.
    • Oversee the use and maintenance of all shared-use equipment in the ISG, including the GenomeFoundry@ISG and the automation suite at the InnoLabs site (to be opened in 2023).
    • Manage entire equipment service process for ISG. Attempt repair of broken equipment when appropriate; arrange for service if not.
    • Oversee the institute’s shared equipment fleet. Maintain and calibrate scientific equipment and train others in its proper use.
    • Serve as ISG’s technical expert to innovate and troubleshoot issues with existing equipment and highly complex experimental set ups.
    • Responsible for dealing with emergencies relating to freezers, incubators, and other essential shared equipment breakdown.
    • Knowledge of 3D printing platforms and design software for prototyping.
    • Experience with Arduino microcontrollers and Raspberry Pi computers.
    • Familiarity with C/C++, C#, Python, and Visual Basic programming languages a plus.
    • Capable of utilizing both Mac and Windows operating systems.
    • Ability to troubleshoot and repair laptops and tower PCs highly desirable.
    • Serve as the institute liaison with OSR Building Operations and NYULH Facilities for all laboratoryrelated issues.
    • Supervise work by summer “GenomeFoundry@ISG fellows”, who are temporary visiting staff scientists, postdoctoral fellows or graduate fellows from other institutions and assure that this work complies with NYU policies and procedures and is scientifically sound.
    • Supervise work by summer high school and undergraduate students on automated platforms in the GenomeFoundry@ISG and assure that this work complies with NYU policies and procedures and is scientifically sound.
    • Working with lab managers, ensure that ISG labs are compliant with EH&S regulations, including hazardous waste management, storage of flammable liquids, and regular testing of eye wash stations.
    • Oversee communications regarding lab operations.
    • Liaise with suppliers to maintain up-to-date knowledge of the latest available technologies. Obtain quotes, as needed, for the development of budgets and to support strategic planning activities.
    • Keep ISG leadership informed about issues relating to equipment and lab space.
    • Organizational ability to plan and deliver work to meet required deadlines.
    • Resilience in working to achieve team objectives and to overcome obstacles.
    • Other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications:
To qualify you must have a Requires a Bachelors degree in molecular biology, genetics or closely related area of science.
Up-to-date knowledge of modern molecular biology is essential.
At least ten years of experience in a basic science molecular biology lab and with lab automation is required.
Experience with establishing protocols on liquid handlers is a must.
Technical understanding of robotics and other laboratory equipment and ability to troubleshoot issues are essential.
Knowledge of yeast genetics is highly desired.
Willing to work full-time and be available to respond outside of regular hours to respond to
emergencies is essential.
Must be an enthusiastic, self-motivated and self-supervising team member.
Must have excellent working knowledge of English and be willing and able to work with people from diverse backgrounds.

NYU Langone Health provides a salary range to comply with the New York City Law on Salary Transparency in Job Advertisements. The salary range for the role is $92,066.00 - $139,256.00 Annually. Actual salaries depend on a variety of factors, including experience, specialty, education, and hospital need. The salary range or contractual rate listed does not include bonuses/incentive, differential pay or other forms of compensation or benefits.
