Utilizing the nursing process, the Director of Nursing assesses the quality and quantity of nursing care provided in assigned areas. Is responsible, on a 24 hour basis, for the coordination of the nursing care plan with the medical plan of care, as well as the coordination of administrative activities with nursing activities. Responsibilities include: Assuring quality patient care, efficient departmental operations, profitability and productivity of the department, marketing of services, and staff and physician satisfaction. C. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES, but not limited to the following: 1. Responsible for the management of patient care so that: a. Patient and family satisfaction is consistently monitored and appropriate corrective actions are taken when necessary.b. Quality of patient care is regularly evaluated and corrective action taken where deficiencies are noted through Quality Improvement/Quality Management processes.c. Direct patient care is performed when necessary.d. Physician satisfaction is consistently monitored, and appropriate corrective actions are taken when necessary.e. Nursing care is coordinated and integrated with other patient care services to provide a continuum of care for the patient in an efficient manner.f. Nursing staffing patterns are implemented-PTO policies are maintained.g. Policies and procedures consistent with then Centers philosophy are developed, implemented, revised, and reviewed on an annual basis. 2. Responsible for the management of human resources so that: a. Manpower planning and usage are monitored on a daily basis and adjusted effectively in response to work load, staffing levels, and fluctuations in patient census.b. Staff turnover due to factors within control of the Director of Nursing is 20% or less annually.c. Performance of staff is consistently monitored and documented utilizing appropriate recognition or disciplinary action as necessary along with merit based performance evaluation.d. The Centers Policies and Procedures are applied on a fair and consistent basise. Positive responses as perceived from the staff that the Director of Nursing is open and fair in communication.f. Written job description for nursing personnel are developed and maintained.g. Nursing personnel are assigned duties based upon education, training, competencies, and job descriptions.h. Staff orientation and education is coordinated with the other areas of the Center.i. Minutes from all meetings are posted in a timely basis and maintained. 3. Responsible for effective verbal and written communication so that:a. The Administrator of the center is informed of appropriate information concerning patient care, unit, and personnel activities in a timely manner.b. Open lines of communication are consistently maintained among the medical staff, employees, and other departments.c. Professionalism, tact, diplomacy, and sensitivity to issues and others, are routinely demonstrated.d. Staff is informed in a timely manner of all relevant memos and information.e. Utilizes staff meetings in small or large groups to communicate essential information as well as listen to staff issues. 4. Responsible for participation in Center organizational planning so that: a. Assistance is provided in the development and implementation of capital equipment and operation budget for the Center.b. Departmental goals and objectives are developed in conjunction with the Centers goals and objectives.c. Contributions to nursing functions are made willingly, participating on committees and attending designated meetings. 5. Responsible for own self-development and professionalism so that: a. Clinical expertise is continually upgraded through participation in continuing education programs, conference, and practiceb. Awareness of current legislation and regulations influencing the standards of nursing practice and patient care is maintained.c. Active participation in professional, civic, or service organizations in an on-going process. 6. Access to entire patients medical record for treatment and healthcare purposes. D. SUPERVISION Responsible to: Vice President of Clinical Operations Responsible for: All clinical oriented personnel within The Center. E. CONTACTS1. Patients.2. Patient family/significant other.3. Surgery center employees.4. Physicians.5. Allied health personnel.6. Contracted service personnel.7. Various corporate representatives on occasion.8. Vendors. F. RESPONSIBILITY FOR ASSETS 1. Maximum care required for safety of patient and patients possessions.2. Care and caution when handling equipment.3. Conservation use of supplies.4. Support trial and implementation of new and less costly supplies and equipment. G. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES, but not limited to the following: 1. PHYSICAL a. Must be able to stand and walk up to 10 hours for each 8 to 12 hour work day.b. May occasionally require up to a 12-hour work day which is determined by unit needs.c. Must be able to push and pull equipment up to 100 pounds and with assistance up to 200 pounds.d. May occasionally lift or carry up to 35-50 pounds and with assistance up to 100 pounds.e. May require frequent exposure to highly stressful situations, to infectious diseases and injury.f. May require frequent exposure to changes of temperature, humidity; exposure to dust, fumes, or gases; exposure to laser waves and laser use by-products. H. EMPLOYMENT VARIABLES 1. Variable between 7:00am and the time the last patient leaves on regular work days, dependant on assigned areas.2. Subject to change according to administrative decision.3. Staff is expected to leave when work is completed. I. MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS 1. EDUCATIONa. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing; Bachelors degree preferred.b. Licensed to practice in the State of New Jersey.c. Certification in CPR.2. EXPERIENCE a. Minimum of three years clinical experience. At least 2-3 years of experience as a Supervisor, Charge Nurse, or other position of management responsibility.b. Interpersonal skills sufficient to manage up to 25 personnel, communicate effectively with patients, visitors, subordinates, and all levels of management and remain knowledgeable about current nursing practice and health trends.c. Analytical demands sufficient to calculate budget, staffing levels and to develop action plans for any departmental deficiencies.d. Visual acuity necessary to review and prepare reports. Mental stability sufficient to cope with complex problems relative to patients, staff physicians and visitors.e. Independent judgment required to solve complex patient care problems, develop strategies to cope with changing health care environment, and balance patient care institutional needs in relation to resources available.
