The Ethicon Surgica! l Care business offers a broad range of products, platforms and technologies-including sutures, surgical staplers, clip appliers, trocars and synthetic mesh devices-that are used in a wide variety of minimally invasive and open surgical procedures. Specialties include support for treatment of colorectal and thoracic conditions, women's health conditions, hernias, cancer and obesity. Principal ! Engineer position in Ethicon Surgical Care R&D, the individual! will lead research and development work with a focus on suture needles and metallurgy associated with wound closure devices. This position is located in Somerville, New Jersey.
Apply expertise in metallurgy, materials processing, and/or device design to drive new product opportunities and solve problems.
Identify and develop technologies for the improved processing of surgical needles, steel sutures, and medical devices.
Provide technical support for the suture needle base business through partnership with Operations, Marketing, Medical Affairs, and Regulatory groups
Drive innovation by partnering with surgeons, identifying unmet needs, generating concepts, and reducing them to practice.
Manage design control and design control history files while contributing towards the implementation of new and/or improved products
Perform hands-on testing in support of exploratory work, evidence generation, prototype development, te! st method validation, and design verification.
Serve as a technical expert in the field providing guidance, advice, and assistance to junior engineers.
Contribute to the development of our patent estate for new technologies, materials, and devices.
Qualifications
A minimum of a M.S. in Metallurgy, Materials Engineering, Materials Science, Materials Science and Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering or relevant discipline is required with a Minimum of 5 yrs. experience in the medical device industry.
Expertise in metal alloy or materials development is a plus.
Expertise in metal forming and metal forming processes is a plus.
Knowledge of Solidworks and/or Autocad is a plus.
Project leadership and Project management skills are a plus.
A track record of publications, patent filings, standards development, and/or activity on international standard committees is a plus.
Able to apply and co! mprehend a broad range of engineering and scientific assignments.
Self-motivating and innovative.
Excellent verbal and technical writing skills are required.
Demonstrated ability to work independently and within a group.
Demonstrated ability to network and maintain relationships within and across various functional groups is required.
Able to effectively utilize the support of technical specialist assigned to the project team.
Computer literate in project planning and data analysis is required.
This position could require up to 20% travel both domestic and international.
