Research Scientist MD, MD/PhD or PhD (Postdoc/Fellowship required)

General Responsibilities :
The candidate will have 5-10 yrs of academic or pharmaceutical industry experience in the design and implementation of preclinical studies! and cell based assays to support indication selection and und! erstanding of mechanism of action of cell based therapeutics . A background in cell biology, stem cell biology and primary cell culture is required. The employee will be responsible for independently characterizing mesenchymal cells activity using various non-clinical models . The candidate is expected to support internal and external collaborative projects, provide experimental design expertise and facilitate data analysis of in vitro and in vivo studies. Extensive knowledge of scientific research processes, workflows and terminology is required.

Specific Responsibilities include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Work within a matrix team to develop novel cell based therapeutic approaches for various indications focusing on (but not limited to) placenta-derived cells.
  • Provide technical expertise for programs to define functional utility of placenta-derived cells.
  • Independently design and implement long â€"term project plan! s and appropriate experiments that define efficacy and mechanism of action for placenta derived cells.
  • Conduct and facilitate gene, protein and function-based in vitro assessments of human derived cells from clinical samples.
  • Improve current functional assessment approaches for placenta-derived cells by designing pertinent novel molecular biology and cell based assays.
  • Recommend and implement studies and strategies to define the potential of placenta-derived cells in pertinent in vivo studies.
  • Implement novel science and technology approaches that allow the creation of placenta-derived cells specific for neurological and/or immunological indications.
  • Provide scientific progress reports to the Senior Manager and/or Senior Management as required.
  • Prepare IND format documentation and / or reports based on scientific results as required.
  • Provide scientific leadership to the research team, as well as, create and trac! k achievable goals for the team that are aligned with Corporate and Div! isional Objectives.
Skills/Knowledge Required:
  • Cell Biology: Advanced knowledge of primary mammalian cell culture systems, expansion and culture techniques including media formulation, multicellular co-cultures, growth factor, cytokine, and extracellular matrix-based protocols. Knowledge of inflammation biology, cell proliferation, cell adhesion cell migration, cell survival and co-culture assays. Experience in development of cell-based assays for cell-cell interaction studies, receptor activation and signal transduction including FACS-based assays, ELISA, Multiplex-Bead assays, immunocyto- and immunohistochemistry. Expertise in development of in vitro and in vivo assays for neurological disorders, vascular biology, and/or expertise in development of in vitro and in vivo assays for cellular immunbiology for cell therapy-based approaches. Familiarity in generation of cell lines and scale-up for functional assessment including protein expression! reporter assays and multiplexed gene assessments.
  • In-Vivo Biology: in vivo models to assess stem cells activity, Mouse tumor and human xenograft models, Mouse angiogenesis models, Genetic mouse modeling,· Animal handling and surgery, · Intravital imaging · Tissue handling, dissection and histology · Microscopy.
  • Molecular Biology: quantitative mRNA analysis (qRT-PCR) assessment, basic molecular biology techniques.
  • Communication and team work: Excellent communication skills to effectively convey scientific concepts and data among research scientists and management teams within internal working groups/project teams and external academic and industrial organizations. Excellent ability to work in functionally matrixed teams and to mentor junior and mid-level scientific staff.
  • Other: Project and personnel management, Gene expression and transduction pathway analysis software packages, MS Excel, MS Word, MS PowerPoint.
Skills/! Knowledge Desired:
  • Cell biology / Molecular Biology Re! search: Expertise in development and execution of in vitro and vivo models for neurovascular and ischemic diseases and/or oncology indications and/or immunbiological indications.
  • Translational cell biology expertise with a focus on functional assessment of cell therapies in pertinent in vivo models.
  • Familiarity with writing of IND research documentation.
Domestic and international travel to CRO’s, company meetings and scientific conferences may be required.
