The Physician’s Assistant assists, monitors, and manages the day-to-day needs of patients as requested by, in conjunction with, and under the supervision of a physician. Responsibilities include assisting the physicians with surgical cases, in-patient hospital care, emergency room and hospital consults and clinic hours. There is shared weekend inpatient rounds/on-call coverage as well as shared night time on-call coverage (13 to 15 weeks and weekends per year).
Essential Generic Job! Functions (List in order of importance):
Obtains! a detailed and accurate history, performs physical examinations and identifies problems in the office, clinic, emergency room and hospital setting. Performs comprehensive and problem focused history and physical exams, interpret and correlate laboratory and diagnostic procedures. Interpret and correlate subjective and objective data to formulate a differential diagnose and establish a working diagnosis. Formulate a treatment plan for Orthopaedic and Orthopaedic Oncological problems within scope of practice. Implement therapeutic intervention for specific conditions when appropriate. Exercise judgment on problems requiring consultation, referral, or evaluation by the supervising Orthopedic surgeon or other health care professionals.
Order, collect, and perform appropriate laboratory or diagnostic procedures, and studies including but not limited to blood and tissue specimens. Ordering or performing diagnostic studies such as but not limited to EMG, electrocardiogram, co! mpartment pressure measurements, biopsies and x-ray examinations including special x-ray examinations CT, MRI, and bone scans etc.
Performing procedures such as but not limited to, digital blocks, regional anesthesia, and minor outpatient surgical procedures such as but not limited to: tendon repair, wound closure, wound management, wound debridement, incision and drainage, needle biopsy, percutaneous pinning of fractures, k-wire removal and hardware removal.
Perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures including but not limited to joint and bursa aspirations, closed reduction of fractures and dislocations, injections of joints, tendons, trigger points and bursa, as well as brace, cast and splint applications.
Obtains and analyzes results of laboratory tests, radiological studies as well as other testing and discusses with patients and supervising physician. Keeps track and maintains pertinent radiological studies.
Assists in surgery to include but not limi! ted to first assist, deep and superficial tissue closures, application ! of appliances and any other action delegated by the surgeon. Conduct hospital rounds and consultations, write orders, and take call for the Orthopaedic surgeon. Evaluate and clarify clinical conditions, formulate and implement a treatment or therapeutic plan for hospitalized patients, dictate discharge summaries, histories and physicals. Write postoperative orders, admission orders, brief operative notes.
Order, prescribe, dispense, and administer Medication, orthosis, orthotics, braces and other Orthopaedic devices.
Evaluate, screen and council patient on health maintenance and promote utilization of community resources. Design, conduct and/or participate in research studies, manage databases, and perform quality assurance.
Provides consultation to the emergency room and floor. Conducts office hours when necessary
Coordinates patient inpatient and outpatient care amongst healthcare professionals, social workers, hospice, physical and occupational therapists! and other services. Organizes family meetings when necessary.
Requests consults from other services, specialists and healthcare providers.
Triages patient calls and evaluates patient problems. Responds to patient calls and emails received after hours and on weekends.
Receives and responds to calls from physicians, nurses and other healthcare professionals during the weekday and when on-call after hours during the week and on weekends
Educate patients and families and discuss laboratory and other test results. Explain surgical procedures to patients. Provides reassurance and counseling for patients as well as continuity of care. Develops health education programs and materials.
Documents patient information and care provided in the medical record and records patient statistics
Starts IVs, inserts foley catheters and nasogastric tubes, irrigates foley catheters, orders transfusions of blood and products, venipuncture, and debridements.

Required Certification/Licensing:
Certification by the National Commission for Certified Physician’s Assistants (NCCPA) within one year of initial employment by the Medical Center.
Registered and licensed by the New Jersey Board of Medical Examiners.
